예전의 니카라과·엘살바도르·온두라스·코스타리카와 함께 형성된 중앙아메리카 연방의 기를 세로의 배열로 바꾸어 문장을 넣었다. 문장은 칼과 총, 그 위에 자유의 상징인 국조 케차일, 중앙의 두루마리에는 '1821년 9월 15일 독립'이라고 씌어 있다. 파랑은 태평양과 대서양을, 흰빛은 평화에 대한 염원을 나타낸다.
