하양은 평화와 희망을, 초록은 환경과 국민을 나타낸다. 종전에는 빨강과 별을 넣어 사회주의 국가임을 상징하였으나, 1992년 공산정권이 붕괴하고 이슬람국 아프가니스탄으로 재출범하면서 전통적인 아랍 색조의 국기로 바꾸었다.
