14개의 줄은 14개의 연방을 의미, 달과 별은 이슬람교를 의미하며 노란색은 왕조를 상징.

달과 별은 이슬람교의 상징이고, 파랑·하양·빨강의 3색은 영국 국기에서 취했다. 별의 빛살과 줄무늬의 수는 연방을 이룬 14주를 나타낸다. 싱가포르가 연방을 이탈하여 13주가 되었으나 국기를 고치지 않았다.
