노랑과 하양 테두리로 둘러진 초록의 Y자형 띠가 가로로 놓여 있고 Y자의 위는 빨강, 아래는 파랑이다. 빨강은 독립과 흑인 해방운동을 위해 흘린 피를, 초록은 농업과 국토를, 노랑은 풍부한 광물자원(주로 금)을, 파랑은 열린 하늘을, 까망과 하양은 흑인과 백인을, Y자는 통합을 나타낸다. 전체적으로는 흑·백 인종, 각 부족, 9개주의 화합을 상징한다. 이전에는 위로부터 오렌지색·하양·파랑의 3색기였으나, 1994년 4월 27일 넬슨 만델라의 흑인 정권 출범을 계기로 이전의 기와 넬슨 만델라가 주도한 ANC(African National Congress:아프리카민족회의)의 기를 결합하여 새로운 국기를 제정하였다. 프레드 브로넬(Fred Brownell)이 디자인하였다.
